Where to Buy Authentic Korean Skincare (And How to Spot a Fake)

Korean skincare has a counterfeit problem. It is the predictable side effect of a few products becoming famous enough to be worth faking — and the fakes have got good enough that the packaging alone will not tell you.

This is a practical guide to buying the real thing, including the honest trade-offs of each route.

Why counterfeits matter more here than elsewhere

A fake handbag is a financial problem. A fake skincare product is a safety problem. You are putting an unknown formulation, mixed in unknown conditions, on your face and near your eyes. Counterfeit cosmetics have been found containing bacteria, unlisted preservatives and ingredients at concentrations that do not match the label.

The products most commonly faked are exactly the ones you have heard of: the snail mucin essences, the viral sunscreens, the cushion compacts. Popularity is the qualification.

Where people actually buy, and what each route costs you

Local beauty retailers and department stores. Safest for authenticity, worst for price and range. You will pay two to three times Korean retail, and you will only find whichever handful of products the buyer chose to stock.

Large marketplaces. Convenient and fast. The risk is structural rather than deliberate: on a marketplace, many sellers can list under the same product page, and inventory is often pooled in the same warehouse. A single unauthorised seller in that mix affects what arrives at your door. Buy from the brand's own storefront where one exists, and be sceptical of prices well below everyone else.

Direct from Korea. Longer delivery, and you are the importer so your country may charge duty. In exchange you get prices close to Korean retail, the full range rather than the export selection, and stock that has not been sitting in a distribution chain for a year.

That last point is underrated. Cosmetics have expiry dates and a period-after-opening window. A product that took eighteen months to reach a shelf has already spent a chunk of its life in transit.

How to check a seller before you buy

Look for a real physical address, not just a contact form. A business willing to publish where it is can be held to account.

Look for a clear returns policy that says what happens with opened products, and a stated response time for support. Vagueness here predicts vagueness when something goes wrong.

Check whether they say where products are sourced. "Authentic" as a bare claim means nothing. Sourced from where, and can they say so?

Be suspicious of a price far below everyone else. Korean skincare is affordable, but there is a floor. A well-known essence at a third of the usual price is either expired, grey-market, or fake.

How to verify the product itself when it arrives

Check the batch code. Korean cosmetics carry a manufacturing code, usually stamped or printed on the bottom of the box and on the container. Counterfeits often have a code on one but not the other, or codes that do not match between box and bottle.

Check the seal and the print quality. Blurry text, misaligned printing, spelling errors in the English or Korean, and a cap that does not sit flush are all warning signs. Genuine Korean packaging is manufactured to a high standard.

Check the texture and smell against reviews. If the snail essence you received is watery rather than slightly viscous, or the sunscreen smells strongly of alcohol when reviewers describe it as scentless, something is wrong.

What to buy first

If you are starting out, buy one thing and use it consistently rather than five things sporadically. The snail mucin essence is the usual entry point because it suits nearly every skin type. A gentle cleanser and a sunscreen you will actually reapply matter more than any serum.
